Sapphire

Sapphire is a variety of corundum (aluminium oxide) and boasts a large variety of colours. It is well known as September's birthstone, but also for its hardness and ability to display the star-effect, also knows as asterism. This stone is most commonly found in Sri Lanka, Burma, East Africa and Pakistan. We are going to explore the history behind the use of sapphire and how it can benefit us all (even if you are not a September baby).

The History of Sapphire
The official name of sapphire has constantly changed throughout history, but its power has remained timeless.
Ancient Persian legends state that the Earth balanced on top of a giant blue sapphire, which they referred to as a Lazvard gemstone. It was believed that this sapphire gave the sky its blue hues.
The Ancient Egyptians referred to the sapphire as Lapis Lazuli, and associated the gemstone with the Eye of Horus, wisdom and healing. They often made sapphire elixirs which were used to heal eye conditions.
The Ancient Greeks adopted this gemstone from the Egyptians and named it "Sapphire", originating from the Greek word "Sappheiros" meaning "blue". They believed that sapphire held strong mystical and healing powers, and associated it with Apollo and the wisdom of the third eye. Many medical tools were adorned with sapphire as it was said to cure rheumatism, colic, mental illness and eye conditions. The Ancient Greeks also wore sapphires to petitions in order to increase their inner wisdom, enabling better communication.
In the Middle Ages, sapphire jewellery and amulets became popular amongst royalty due to the belief that they could protect the owner from poison, and the harm and envy of others.
